What Is Plasma Resurfacing?
Plasma skin resurfacing is an FDA-approved procedure that uses thermal energy to reveal youthful, rejuvenated skin. It differs from previous treatments because, rather than removing the surface layer of the skin, it stimulates a natural rejuvenation process below the top layer of the skin to improve skin tone and texture. As a newer type of skin therapy, plasma skin resurfacing is a unique, non-laser facial rejuvenation technique that reduces signs of aging and delivers facelift-like effects with little downtime.

How does plasma skin resurfacing work?
To understand how plasma skin regeneration works, a basic understanding of skin structure is required. Briefly, the skin consists of three layers – the epidermis, dermis, and subcutis. The epidermis contains pigment-producing cells called melanocytes, which are responsible for skin coloring. The dermis is made up of collagen and elastin fibers that provide skin with strength, toughness, elasticity, and pliability.
As the body ages, the appearance and characteristics of the skin alter. The epidermis becomes thinner, so blemishes become more visible, and collagen in the dermis is gradually lost, which contributes to the formation of facial lines, sagging skin, and wrinkles.
Plasma skin regeneration technology uses energy delivered from plasma rather than light or radiofrequency, compared to other skin regeneration modalities. Within the handpiece, an ultra-high-frequency generator excites inert nitrogen gas, which is converted into activated ionized gas called plasma. This plasma-containing energy is directed through the tip of the handpiece and onto the skin. The energy delivered produces a heating action that works at the skin’s surface to remove old photodamaged epidermal cells and below the skin surface or dermis to promote collagen growth. Immediately after the treatment, your face appears red and then it will change to brown over a few days and a thin layer will peel off.
As the new skin emerges, the old skin will start to shed. With less trauma than ablative (melting) procedures, healing is rapid. Recovery time is minimal and easily tolerated while improvements are dramatic and long lasting. Surface improvements will appear quickly, and deep dermal collagen remodeling continues for months to years. The results are “permanent” (as you naturally continue to age). Clinical studies have shown continuous improvements for as long as one year after treatment.
What does the procedure feel like?
A perscription strength topical numbing cream is applied to the skin prior to the procedure, which ensures the patient doesn’t feel any discomfort during the procedure.
How long does the procedure take?
A full-face treatment takes about one to two hours. Other parts of the body can take longer.
What should I expect following treatment?
After treatment, your technician will provide you with a serum to apply to the treated area 2-5 times daily until any carbon crusts have fallen off. It should then be used morning and night as a procedure enhancer during the 12-week healing period after a Plasma Pen treatment. This product keeps the treated area moist and accelerates the healing process. We also recommend using FACTORFIVE Regenerative Serum, twice per day. These are the only products to use for 7 days following the procedure, unless told otherwise by your technician.
By the seventh day, shedding of the outer layer of skin will be complete, leaving new skin in its place. Some patients may experience some localized redness after treatment. Once the skin sheds, this redness will lighten over time.

Is the procedure safe?
Plasma skin regeneration has demonstrated an excellent safety profile in clinical studies. The treatment has not shown protracted periods of downtime, scarring, hypopigmentation, or prolonged hyperpigmentation associated with other light or ablative laser treatments. It is also easier to use and control than chemical peeling agents.
