Fitzpatrick skin typing is a way of classifying skin types with specific reference to the risk of sunburn and skin cancer.

Fitzpatrick skin type 1
- Very pale white skin, often with green or blue eyes and fair or red hair
- Sun reaction: skin always freckles, always burns and peels, and never tans
Fitzpatrick skin type 2
- Fair or pale skin, often with blue, gray, or green eyes, blonde hair
- Sun reaction: burns, freckles, and rarely tans
Fitzpatrick skin type 3
- Fair skin with hazel or brown eyes and brown hair
- Sun reaction: Burns then tans, skin might freckle, burns on occasion
Fitzpatrick skin type 4
- Light brown skin, dark eyes, and dark hair
- Sun reaction: burns a little and tans easily
Fitzpatrick skin type 5
- Brown skin, dark eyes, and dark hair
- Sun reaction: easily tans to darker color and rarely burns
Fitzpatrick skin type 6
- Dark brown or black skin, dark eyes, and dark hair
- Sun reaction: never burns but tans darker
