Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Treatments

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Treatments

Lucent IPL Photofacial

Light that reveals your skin.

Lucent IPL uses precision broad-spectrum light to soften pigmentation, sun damage, age spots, rosacea, and uneven tone, while building collagen and elastin underneath. Every treatment is customized to you, with no downtime.

For optimal results, a series of 3 treatments spaced 1 month apart is recommended. Some individuals may require more.

What It Is

A photofacial powered by targeted light

IPL, or intense pulsed light, uses broad-spectrum light to target specific chromophores in the skin, such as melanin (brown pigment) or hemoglobin (redness and vessels), delivering energy at different wavelengths to address a range of aesthetic and dermatologic needs.

Because the light is drawn to the pigment and vessels rather than the surrounding skin, IPL can treat several concerns in a single session while leaving everything around them untouched.

During Treatment

Gentle on everything around it

During treatment, pulses of light energy are delivered onto the skin and safely target imperfections. A light snapping sensation and warmth is felt with each pulse, and is typically very well tolerated.

The surrounding skin is not injured, which means there is no downtime. You can return to your day immediately after your appointment.

Safety

When to wait, for your safety

A consultation confirms candidacy. IPL is not recommended in the following cases.

Please tell us if you have

  • Active cold sores: antiviral medication should be taken 1 week before and 1 week after treatment.
  • Recent Accutane use: within 6 months of treatment.

We recommend waiting if you have

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding: we recommend waiting until after this period.
  • A fresh tan or tanning cream: a tan must be 4 weeks old before treatment, and 14 days for tanning cream.

An honest note on melasma

Melasma is the exception to IPL’s pigment-clearing strengths. Because melasma is driven by heat and light sensitivity, energy-based treatments like IPL can actually make it worse, and we will not treat melasma with IPL at Renew. If your brown patches are melasma rather than sun damage, we will tell you at your consultation and point you toward the approaches that genuinely help. Learn more on our melasma page.

Questions, Answered

Lucent IPL FAQ

Most people describe each pulse as a light snapping sensation with some warmth, and it is typically very well tolerated. No numbing is needed for most areas, and any warmth or flush settles within a few hours of treatment.

It depends on the concern. Photorejuvenation typically takes a series of 3 treatments about a month apart, rosacea responds best to a series of 5, and acne protocols run 8 weekly sessions. Some skin needs additional sessions, and your consultation maps out your specific series.

That is the treatment working. IPL energy is absorbed by the pigment, which causes treated spots to darken over the first days, then fade and flake away within 1 to 2 weeks. The darkening phase is temporary and expected, and what follows is the clearer skin underneath.

IPL is appropriate for Fitzpatrick skin types 1 through 4. In deeper skin tones, the light cannot reliably distinguish the pigment in a sun spot from the pigment in the surrounding skin, which raises the risk of unwanted pigment changes. If IPL is not the safe choice for your skin, we will tell you plainly and recommend alternatives at your consultation.

No, and we want to be direct about this because it matters. Melasma is heat- and light-sensitive, and IPL can make it worse rather than better. If your pigment turns out to be melasma, we will not treat it with IPL, and we will walk you through what actually helps instead. You can read more on our melasma page.

Arrive with skin that has not seen recent sun: a tan needs to be at least 4 weeks old, and self-tanner at least 14 days out. If you get cold sores, start antiviral medication 1 week before treatment and continue 1 week after. And plan on daily sunscreen after your session to protect your result, which we will review with you at your visit.

With a free consultation. We assess your skin and your pigment, confirm IPL is the safe and effective choice for you, and build your treatment series around your concern and your schedule.
