What is pigment?

Excess pigment in the skin can manifest in various ways and is often associated with hyperpigmentation. Hyperpigmentation occurs when there is an overproduction or accumulation of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color. Some common forms of excess pigment in the skin include:

  • Sunspots (Solar Lentigines): These are darkened areas of skin caused by prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. They typically appear as flat, brown spots on sun-exposed areas such as the face, hands, arms, and shoulders.
  • Freckles (Ephelides): Freckles are small, concentrated areas of increased melanin production. They are usually more prominent in individuals with fair skin and tend to darken upon sun exposure.
  • Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH): PIH occurs as a result of skin inflammation or injury, such as acne, cuts, burns, or skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis. It leads to darkening of the affected areas as melanocytes produce more melanin in response to the inflammation.
  • Melasma: Melasma is a common skin condition characterized by patches of darkened skin, typically on the face. It is often associated with hormonal changes, such as those occurring during pregnancy or with the use of hormonal contraceptives, and sun exposure.
  • Age Spots (Lentigines): These are similar to sunspots but are more commonly associated with aging. They appear as flat, brown spots on areas of the skin that have experienced cumulative sun exposure over time.

Treatments we offer to address pigment

Intense Pulse Light (IPL)

Our Lucent IPL device has the power to enhance your natural beauty and address common skin flaws such as pigmentation, sun damage, age spots, acne, bruises, broken capillaries, rosacea, vascular lesions, and uneven skin tone. IPL technology uses broad-spectrum light to target specific chromophores in the skin, such as melanin and hemoglobin, and delivers energy at different wavelengths to address numerous aesthetic and dermatology needs.

Chemical Peel

The VI Peel Precision Plus is a painless and medium-depth chemical peel that’s safe for all skin types and tones. It’s our most popular treatment, and works to suppress melanogenesis—the production of melanin—at the source while promoting rapid cell turnover for more even and bright skin tone. Resurfacing action reveals brighter, renewed skin for results in 7 days. For skin concerns: sun damage, melasma, UV-induced pigmentation, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).

RF Microneedling and Microneedling

Microneedling with and without RF addresses skin concerns for both face and body and helps the skin remodel and repair itself from within. Treatment benefits include increased skin elasticity, fine line and wrinkle reduction, improved skin texture, pigment removal, reduction in scarring and stretch marks, and bright and even complexion.

Opus Plasma Skin Tightening and Resurfacing

This high-impact treatment improves skin tone and texture, reduces fine lines and wrinkles, tightens skin, improves scars and stretch marks, and builds collagen. Results include smaller pores, smooth and glowing skin, tighter skin with more elasticity, and rejuvenated and healthy skin that will have your friends and family complimenting you on your glowing and younger- looking skin. How IPL lifts and clears pigment from the skin

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy is a laser treatment safe for Fitzpatrick skin types 1-3 that lifts and removes pigment. Here’s how it works:

  • Absorption: The melanin in the pigmented cells absorbs the light energy from the IPL device.
  • Heating: As the melanin absorbs the light energy, it heats up. This heat selectively damages the pigmented cells while leaving the surrounding skin unaffected.
  • Breakdown: The heat causes the pigmented cells to break apart into smaller particles.
  • Elimination: The body’s natural processes clear away the fragmented pigmented cells, gradually reducing the appearance of the pigmented lesion and leaving your skin clear and bright.

For optimal results, a series of 3 treatments spaced 1 month apart is recommended. Visible results are seen with every treatment.

How the VI Peel chemical peel lifts and clears pigment from the skin

VI Peel is a type of chemical peel that is safe for all skin types and formulated to improve various skin conditions, including pigment. Here’s how it helps with pigment:

  • Suppresses melanogenesis: VI Peel contains ingredients that help inhibit the production of melanin at the source while promoting rapid cell turnover.
  • Exfoliation: VI Peel contains a blend of ingredients, including glycolic acid, salicylic acid, lactic acid, and trichloroacetic acid (TCA), that together break down and remove the damaged skin cells on the surface, where pigment irregularities such as age spots, sun damage, and melasma are present.
  • Promotes skin renewal: The chemical peel process stimulates the skin’s natural healing response, leading to increased collagen production and skin renewal. This can help improve the overall texture and tone of the skin, reducing the appearance of acne scars and hyperpigmentation.
  • Reduces fine lines and wrinkles: The combination of acids, antioxidants, and exfoliants penetrates the skin deeply, causing a resurfacing process that stimulates new cell production, including collagen and elastin for a smoother, firmer, more youthful skin.

For optimal results, a series of 3 treatments spaced 1 month apart is recommended. Visible results are seen with every treatment.
