Acne Treatments in Eagan, MN

Clearer, calmer, more even skin, with a professional plan that targets active breakouts and the marks they leave behind. Here is how we treat acne and acne scarring at Renew MedSpa.

Acne is one of the most common skin concerns we treat, and one of the most frustrating to manage on your own. It happens when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells, leading to inflammation, breakouts, and, over time, scarring and dark marks that can linger long after the blemish is gone.

The good news: acne responds well to the right professional plan. At Renew MedSpa, we combine proven in-office treatments with medical-grade skincare to clear active breakouts, calm inflammation, and improve the tone and texture acne leaves behind, tailored to your skin type and the kind of acne you have.

Two different problems: active acne and acne scars

This distinction matters, because they are treated differently. Clearing active breakouts and repairing old scarring are two separate goals, and a good plan addresses them in the right order.

Active acne
  • Current breakouts, oil, clogged pores, and inflammation
  • Treated with IPL and VI Peel to clear bacteria, reduce oil, and calm inflammation
  • Supported by medical-grade skincare to keep skin clear day to day
Acne scars & marks
  • Textural scarring and post-acne dark marks left behind after breakouts heal
  • Treated with laser resurfacing to rebuild collagen and smooth texture
  • Best addressed once active acne is under control

How we treat active acne

1

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)

Our Lucent IPL uses broad-spectrum light to calm inflammation, reduce acne-causing bacteria, and fade the redness and post-acne discoloration that breakouts leave behind. It also helps refine tone and texture, so skin looks clearer and brighter overall. IPL is best suited to lighter skin tones (Fitzpatrick types 1 to 3), which we confirm at your consultation.

2

VI Peel

The VI Peel is a medical-grade chemical peel with a formulation specifically for acne. It works on multiple levels at once, clearing pores, reducing excess oil, targeting acne-causing bacteria, and encouraging cell turnover to reveal clearer skin. There is a formulation for acne and one for acne with scarring, matched to your skin at your appointment.

3

Medical-grade skincare

Professional treatments clear and reset the skin, but what you use at home keeps it that way. We match you with medical-grade skincare, such as targeted retinoid and clearing serums, to unclog pores, reduce breakouts, and maintain your results between treatments. Products do not replace treatment, but they meaningfully extend and protect it.

For many patients, the most effective approach is combining IPL and VI Peel over a short series, then maintaining with skincare. We build the right combination and cadence for your skin at your consultation.

When acne needs a dermatologist and medication

We want to be honest about where our treatments fit. In-office treatments and medical-grade skincare are excellent for many types of acne, but they are not the right answer for everyone. We do not prescribe acne medication, and some acne genuinely needs it.

It is worth seeing a dermatologist for prescription treatment if you have deep, painful cystic or nodular acne, widespread acne that is not responding to professional treatments and good skincare, acne that is scarring as it heals, or breakouts tied to a medical or hormonal condition that needs to be managed. In those cases, prescription options such as topical or oral medication, prescription retinoids, or hormonal therapy may be the appropriate first step.

None of that closes the door on working with us. Many people manage their acne with a dermatologist and use our treatments to address the tone, texture, and scarring acne leaves behind. We are glad to be part of that plan, and we will always tell you honestly when a dermatologist should be your starting point.

Treating acne scars

Once active acne is under control, we can turn to the marks it left behind. Textural acne scarring responds best to resurfacing that rebuilds collagen from within. Our Helix CO2 laser is our most powerful tool for smoothing acne scars and refining skin texture, with CoolPeel PDGF as a lighter option when less downtime is preferred.

For post-acne dark marks (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation) rather than textural scars, IPL and VI Peel often help significantly, along with pigment-focused skincare. We will identify which type of marking you have and match the treatment to it.

Clear the acne first, then refine what it left behind. Order matters.

Staying clear: ongoing maintenance

Acne is a condition to manage, not a one-time fix. Consistent professional care keeps skin balanced, exfoliated, and less prone to breakouts over time. Many of our acne patients join our Love Your Skin membership, which includes a monthly professional treatment to help keep skin clear, calm, and healthy between corrective sessions. It is an easy, cost-effective way to stay ahead of breakouts rather than chasing them.

Common Questions

Acne treatment, answered

For most patients, a combination works best: IPL to calm inflammation and bacteria, VI Peel to clear pores and reduce oil, and medical-grade skincare to maintain results. The right mix depends on your skin type and the kind of acne you have, which we assess at your consultation.

Yes. Textural acne scars respond best to laser resurfacing like Helix CO2 or the lighter CoolPeel PDGF, which rebuild collagen and smooth the skin. Post-acne dark marks often improve with IPL, VI Peel, and pigment-focused skincare. We usually clear active acne first, then address scarring.

It varies with the severity and type of your acne. Many patients do a short series of IPL and VI Peel treatments, then maintain with skincare and periodic professional facials. We will give you an honest estimate and a clear plan at your consultation.

IPL is best suited to lighter skin tones (Fitzpatrick types 1 to 3). If IPL is not the right fit for your skin, we have other effective options, including VI Peel and skincare-based approaches. We confirm the safest, most effective plan for your skin at your appointment.

Yes. Professional treatments do the corrective work, but medical-grade skincare maintains and extends your results, keeping pores clear and reducing future breakouts. Products alone will not match procedure results, but they make a real difference between visits.
