Seborrheic Keratosis

Seborrheic Keratosis

Seborrheic keratosis is a common, benign (non-cancerous) skin growth that often appears as raised, wart-like bumps on the skin. While these growths may look concerning, they are harmless and do not require treatment unless they become bothersome.

Appearance

  • Slightly elevated, wart-like bumps
  • Oval or round in shape
  • Color varies from light tan to dark brown or black
  • May have a waxy, scaly, or rough texture

Causes

  • Exact cause is unknown.
  • May be linked to aging, sun exposure, or genetic factors.
  • You’ll likely notice these skin growths on arms, face, scalp, back, chest, and legs. What do those areas have in common? They’re all exposed to the sun. That’s why most dermatologists believe the sun triggers these growths. But not everyone gets these wart-like growths from sun exposure. It’s also a matter of genetics. Some people are genetically predisposed to seborrheic keratosis. So, with their genetic background, exposure to the sun initiates the genes that cause these places to form. If you start getting these skin growths, look at your family — others likely have them too.

Common Locations

  • Can develop anywhere on the body, except the palms and soles
  • Most commonly found on the face, chest, back, and shoulders

Symptoms

  • Typically asymptomatic (causing no pain or discomfort)
  • May occasionally itch, become irritated, or catch on clothing

Treatment

Most seborrheic keratoses do not require treatment. However, if they become irritated, painful, or cosmetically unappealing, removal options include:

  • Mole & Skin Tag Removal – Removing with electrical current. This is a service offered at Renew MedSpa, and our clients love their results.
  • Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) can help reduce the pigment in Seborrheic Keratosis but it does not remove the thickened or raised lesion itself. For some patients, we combine both IPL and Mole & Skin Tag Removal for optimal results.
  • Cryotherapy – Freezing with liquid nitrogen
  • Excision – Surgical removal

Prognosis

  • Seborrheic keratoses are completely benign and pose no health risks.
  • They may increase in number and size over time.
  • Removal is for cosmetic reasons only and does not prevent new growths.

Important Note:

Seborrheic keratosis is different from actinic keratosis, a pre-cancerous lesion that may lead to skin cancer. If you notice any unusual skin changes or have concerns about a growth, consult a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management.
