What is Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin?
Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin are FDA-approved injectable treatments derived from botulinum toxin (tox), which temporarily weaken or paralyze targeted muscles to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles with no down time. The effectiveness and duration of these treatments depend on several factors, including dosage, individual metabolism, lifestyle choices, and frequency of treatments. Although they serve similar purposes, these three products vary slightly in their formulation, diffusion, and onset of action.
Botox
- Brand: Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA) is the most well-known brand.
- Formulation: It contains accessory proteins that help protect the botulinum toxin molecule.
- Results: Can take up to 14 days for full results, with effects lasting 3-4 months.
Dysport
- Brand: Dysport (abobotulinumtoxinA) tends to diffuse more than Botox, which can make it a better option for treating larger areas like the forehead.
- Formulation: Like Botox, Dysport also contains protective proteins. The molecule is smaller, so this product tends to kick in quicker.
- Results: Results may appear faster than Botox (within 2-3 days), but it lasts for a similar period of 3-4 months.
Xeomin
- Brand: Xeomin (incobotulinumtoxinA) is unique because it doesn’t contain any accessory proteins, meaning it is a “naked” form of botulinum toxin.
- Formulation: Lacks the proteins found in Botox and Dysport, making it less likely to cause resistance in patients who have built up antibodies to the accessory proteins.
- Results: Typically seen within 3-4 days, with effects lasting 3-4 months.
How it works
Wrinkles form as the muscles under our skin contracts. When we frown, laugh, smile, or make other facial expressions, these muscles continually relax and contract, which makes them more visible over time (dynamic lines become static lines). tox injections work by temporarily relaxing muscles underneath the skin and thus weakening their ability to contract, which then stops the skin from creasing. The result is smoother and younger looking skin. You look like you but with less lines and wrinkles – a natural and refreshed appearance without changing the look or movement of the rest of your face. The results last 3-5 months and cause no negative side effects when administered by experienced professionals such as those that make up our Renew MedSpa team.
What is a treatment like?
Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin are non-invasive treatments that are injected under the skin and into targeted muscles. At Renew MedSpa, we administer every injectable treatment with care and precision, ensuring that you get the natural results you want without looking overdone. When you come in for your appointment at our Eagan center, we will take the time to listen to your goals, create a custom treatment plan, and provide the best treatment possible!
Which product should I get?
All tox injections are similar but there’s small differences between them, such as how soon they take effect, how long they last, etc. Your Renew MedSpa provider will educate you on the differences and help you choose which product to choose to meet your treatment expectations.
How soon will I see results?
After a treatment, you will start to notice changes in about 3-5 days with final results settling after 10-12 days. Results are temporary and touch-up treatments are needed 2-3 times per year to maintain results. Typically the younger you are, the longer your results will last.
The effectiveness and longevity of neurotoxin results are affected by many factors, including:
- Dosage – A higher dosage can produce longer-lasting results, but it can also lead to negative side effects.
- Metabolism – Different people metabolize neurotoxin at different rates.
- Age – Younger patients may see longer-lasting results due to better skin elasticity.
- Lifestyle – Smoking and alcohol consumption can speed up the breakdown of neurotoxin.
- Stress – Stress can lead to muscle tension, which can affect the efficacy of neurotoxin.
- Facial movements – Excessive facial movements, such as squinting, frowning, or raising your eyebrows, can shorten the effects of neurotoxin.
- Strenuous activities – Activities that cause excessive sweating or blood flow to the face, such as hot yoga, saunas, and strenuous exercise, can shorten the effects of neurotoxin.
- Sun exposure – Protecting your skin from the sun can enhance the longevity of neurotoxin results.
- Frequency of treatments – Neurotoxin effectiveness might decrease with repeated use over many years, possibly requiring more frequent treatments.
- Infrequent treatments – If you are getting treatment for the first time or after a long break, it may take more than one treatment to achieve desired results. For optimal and continued results, treatment is needed every 3-4 months.

When is a good time to start tox treatments?
It’s not your age that determines when Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin is right for you, it’s the severity of your lines. These injections have gained much popularity to be preventative as it is much easier than correcting a static line. Everyone’s lines form differently, and the timing can be influenced by a combination of factors, from cellular changes that may occur over time, to reduction of collagen, to genetic factors or damage caused by free radicals from the sun and the environment. Whenever your lines start to bother you or if you want to prevent lines from forming on your face, that is the right time.
