Tirzepatide, sold under the brand name Mounjaro®, is the newest injectable drug in a group of drugs called GLP-1 receptor agonists (or GLP-1 mimickers). It was FDA approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes in May 2022. In addition to its effects on blood sugar and insulin levels, studies have shown that Mounjaro (tirzepatide) provided substantial and sustained weight loss.
How does Mounjaro (tirzepatide) work for weight loss?
Tirzepatide works by mimicking the action of two different gut hormones. When blood sugar rises after eating, the drug stimulates the body to produce more insulin, which lowers blood sugar. It also slows down the movement of food from the stomach, making people feel fuller for longer. When used along with healthy eating and exercise, overweight adults who may also have high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol typically see significant improvements across all health markers.
What is Mounjaro (tirzepatide)?
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a once-weekly GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) receptor and GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agonist. Tirzepatide is a single molecule that activates the body’s receptors for GIP and GLP-1, which are natural incretin hormones. Both GIP and GLP-1 receptors are found in areas of the human brain important for appetite regulation. Tirzepatide has been shown to decrease food intake and modulate fat utilization. Tirzepatide belongs to a group of medications that was originally developed to treat diabetes and act on the GLP-1 receptor in the body, similar to Ozempic (semaglutide). However, Tirzepatide also activates the GIP receptor, which makes it more effective than semuglide.
Tirzepatide is the generic, compounded product of Mounjaro and includes vitamin B6 to offset negative side effects such as nausea. Tirzepatide is shipped directly to your home from our licensed and FDA-approved compounding pharmacy. Tirzepatide is less expensive than Mounjaro, and the monthly cost of the medication depends on the dose you’re on, which is managed by our physician assistant.

How much weight can I lose?

How is Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) taken?
A self-administered injection once per week. Prescriptions are for 4 weeks, and each month the tolerance to the medication and the current dose is assessed. The dose is adjusted depending on effect and possible side effects.
Lab testing and monitoring
An initial set of labs are is needed at the start of the program. You can order through your doctor or schedule a lab test appointment at Any Lab Test Now (located in Plymouth and Lakeville) and request the Annual Check-up Panel test, which includes the following.
