Congratulations on participating in Renew MedSpa’s Weight Loss Medication Program. Following is a guide on how to prepare a syringe and complete an injection.
How you will receive your medication and how to store it
The medication is shipped to your home direct from the pharmacy and will arrive by overnight delivery. Each shipment will include your medication, syringes, and alcohol pads. Store the medication in your refrigerator. Do not freeze, and protect it from heat and light.
Supplies needed for injection
- Sharps container. You can get one on Amazon or local pharmacy.
- The medication, syringe, and alcohol wipe
Get the vial ready
- Thoroughly wash your hands.
- If this is your first time using this medicine, carefully remove the cap off the vial. Do not remove the rubber top below the cap.
- Wipe the rubber top clean with an alcohol pad.
Filling the syringe with medicine
- Hold the syringe in your hand like a pencil, with the needle pointed up.
- With the cap still on, pull back the plunger to the unit line on your syringe for your dose. This fills the syringe with air.
- Insert the needle into the rubber top. Do not touch or bend the needle.
- Push the air into the vial. This keeps a vacuum from forming. If you put in too little air, you will find it hard to draw out the medicine. If you put in too much air, the medicine may be forced out of the syringe.
- Keep the needle tip in the medicine. Turn the vial upside down and hold it up in the air.
- Slowly pull back the plunger to the line on your syringe for your dose. For example, if you need 25 units, pull the plunger to the 25-unit mark.
- Carefully put the cover back on to the syringe until you are ready to inject.
Doing the injection
- Thoroughly wash your hands.
- Select an injection site. The medication should be injected under the skin (subcutaneously) into a fatty part of the skin, such as your stomach (abdomen), thigh, or back of upper arm. If you choose your stomach area as your injection site, make sure to inject two inches away from the belly button on either side. Injection sites should be rotated weekly.
- Wipe the injection site with an alcohol wipe.
- Remove the cover from the prepared syringe, gently pinch the skin between your thumb and index finger and hold it. Inject the needle into the pinched skin at a 90-degree angle. Make sure to do this quickly, but without any great force. Then push the injection, withdraw the needle, and apply pressure to the injection site.
- Carefully dispose of the used syringe in an FDA-cleared sharps disposal container right away after use. If you don’t have a sharps container, you can use a household container that is made of a heavy-duty plastic, such as empty laundry soap plastic container. To dispose syringes, drop off at a hazardous waste site in your local area.
What if I miss a dose?
If four or less days have passed since the missed dose, take the missed dose as soon as you think about it, then resume your normal dosing schedule. If four or more days have passed since the missed dose, skip the missed dose, then resume your normal dosing schedule.
