Heavy Eyelids

Eyelid ptosis, also known as ptosis or blepharoptosis, is a condition characterized by the drooping or sagging of the upper eyelid. This can affect one or both eyes and may occur gradually over time or suddenly. Ptosis can vary in severity, from a slight droop that is barely noticeable to a more significant droop that can obstruct vision.

Here are some common causes and types of eyelid ptosis:

  1. Age-related ptosis: As people age, the muscles responsible for lifting the eyelids can weaken, leading to drooping.
  2. Congenital ptosis: Some individuals are born with ptosis, and it can be due to a developmental issue with the muscles responsible for lifting the eyelids.
  3. Muscle or nerve damage: Injury to the muscles or nerves that control eyelid movement can result in ptosis. This damage can occur due to trauma, surgery, or certain medical conditions.
  4. Neurological disorders: Some neurological conditions, such as myasthenia gravis or third nerve palsy, can cause eyelid ptosis.
  5. Horner’s syndrome: This syndrome, which affects the sympathetic nerves in the face, can cause ptosis along with other symptoms like a constricted pupil and a lack of sweating on one side of the face.

Treatment for eyelid ptosis depends on the underlying cause and the severity of the condition. In some cases, surgical intervention may be recommended to correct the position of the eyelid and improve vision if necessary. If the ptosis is mild and not affecting vision, non-surgical treatments such as Opus Colibri is an excellent option.
